OH Art Foundation is pleased to announce Bajo las Costuras / Beneath the Seams, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Carina Yepez. On view from September 19th to October 12th, 2025, we invite all to join us for the exhibition opening on Friday, September 19th, from 7-10pm on the 3rd floor of the Zhou B Art Center.

Evidence of the artist’s hand is embedded everywhere—carefully interwoven photographs, organic forms coaxed from glass, and trails of thread that transform into imagined topographies. Yet hers is not the only one that guides the work: Yepez’s practice honors the invisible labor of past generations, pulling back the veil on overlooked traditions. Instead of shirking from mediums traditionally considered domestic or feminine, Yepez builds upon their rich histories to explore and preserve diasporic narratives. The processes themselves become transformative; take, for one, weaving: a practical methodology often used to create vessels, employed here to hold the metaphysical—a memory, a story, a history. Yet what is featured in Bajo las Costuras / Beneath the Seams is far from intangible; the materials too familiar, the figures too tender. The individuals appearing in Yepez’s quilts gaze beckon in the same way her work does: they urge the viewer to step forward, to engage in the act of remembering. The intricacy of Yepez’s work is mesmerizing, making it almost impossible to decipher where one thread ends and another begins. A reminder, perhaps, that every retelling is its own beginning, that the past is not as distant as it may seem—and if one only wishes, it can be brought closer still.

Carina Yepez (b.1985) is Chicago, Illinois, native with family roots in Guanajuato, Mexico. She is an educator and artist. She is passionate about exploring the traditions of matriarchy and the interconnected stories of Chicago immigrants through quilting. By using sewing as her medium, she delves into the techniques of domesticity and expresses her family's stories with a focus on healing ancestral trauma. Her work sparks conversations about the intersection of craft and fine art through sewing and appliqué layering, honoring her culture through floral motifs in her quilts and photographic weavings.
